Testo 872 (product code 0560 8721) is a handheld thermal imaging camera designed for industrial maintenance and building thermography. Its 320 × 240 pixel infrared detector is increased to 640 × 480 pixel resolution with the integrated Testo SuperResolution technology and displays temperature differences below 0.05 °C (50 mK). It offers a −30 … +650 °C measuring range, a laser marker, a 5 MP digital camera, the Testo Thermography App via WLAN, and Bluetooth connection to the Testo 770-3 clamp meter and the Testo 605i thermohygrometer. It is the same product as the model also sold in Europe under the name Testo 872s.

High Resolution for Industrial Maintenance and Building Thermography

The integrated laser marker shows the measured point both in reality and as a measuring point on the thermal image. Center point, automatic hot/cold spot, delta T and min./max. temperature within a selected area analyses are performed; 2x, 3x and 4x digital zoom and 10 color palettes are provided. The IFOV warner marks the area that can be measured accurately at the given distance, Testo ε-Assist automatically sets emissivity and reflected temperature with the supplied ε-markers, and Testo ScaleAssist automatically adjusts the scale for comparable images in building thermography.

In electrical mode, current, voltage or power values are entered manually or transferred automatically via Bluetooth from the Testo 770-3 clamp meter; this way the measured temperatures are evaluated together with the load condition. In humidity mode, ambient temperature and humidity are entered manually or transferred from the Testo 605i thermohygrometer; the humidity palette, which works on the traffic light principle, shows places at risk of mold formation. In solar mode, the solar radiation value is entered manually for the measurement.

The main applications are early detection of hot spots in electrical installations and critical temperatures in motors, shafts and bearings; underfloor heating routing, radiator sludge buildup, flow and return temperatures, and pipe leak detection without breaking walls; and finding insulation defects, thermal bridges and, with a blower door test, air leaks in the building envelope. Reports are prepared on site with the Testo Thermography App, and detailed analysis is carried out with the free Testo IRSoft software.

Technician Recommendations

• Measure the panel under load: heating at electrical connections becomes more pronounced as the load increases; record the current with the Testo 770-3 in electrical mode and report the image together with the load information.
• Set the emissivity with a marker: on pipe, radiator and panel surfaces, stick on the ε-marker and use ε-Assist; incorrect emissivity distorts the measured temperature.
• Watch out for reflections on shiny surfaces: shiny metal and glass reflect surrounding heat sources; apply emissivity tape or a marker to the measuring point.
• Use the laser for aiming: since the laser point is also marked in the image, verify which point you are measuring on small connection points; the laser is class 2, do not point it at the eyes.
• Do not leave it outdoors permanently: the camera is IP54 protected but is not suitable for permanent outdoor use.
