Testo 417 Digital Vane Anemometer – 100 mm Vane, 0.3…20 m/s, Volume Flow and Temperature, Bluetooth (0563 0417)

Testo 417 (product code 0563 0417) is a digital 100 mm vane anemometer that measures air velocity, volume flow and air temperature at the air inlets and outlets (vents, grilles, diffusers) of air conditioning and ventilation systems. It has a measuring range of 0.3 … 20 m/s and an accuracy of ±(0.1 m/s + 1.5% of measured value); the volume flow is calculated automatically in the device and shown on the display. It connects via Bluetooth to the free Testo Smart App.

Volume Flow Measurement at Vents and Grilles

The cross-section area of the vent or grille is entered in the device's settings menu; the Testo 417 calculates the volume flow from the measured air velocity in m³/h, l/s or cfm. The multi-point average gives the average of readings recorded at selected points on the vent surface, and the timed average gives the average of the values taken over the measurement period. The HOLD button freezes the current value and shows the max./min. values; the display illumination makes reading easier in dark spots.

With the Testo Smart App, the measurement is configured from the app, the smartphone is used as a second display, values are monitored and saved graphically; a measurement report with photos is created on site as a PDF/CSV file and sent by e-mail. With these features it is suitable for adjusting residential ventilation systems and for commissioning documentation. The measurement printout can also be obtained from the Testo Bluetooth printer.

Measuring funnels for disc valves and fan outlets are not included in the scope of delivery; the funnels come together in the Testo 417 Set 1. With the testovent 417 funnel set (0563 4170), volume flow is measured in the range 0 … 440 m³/h; the funnel factor is activated in the device's settings menu.

Technician Tips

• Enter the cross-section area correctly: the volume flow is calculated from the entered area; for vent measurements, use the free (effective) area of the vent.
• Divide the surface into points: for the multi-point average, divide the vent surface into evenly spaced points and record a reading at each point; a velocity read at a single point does not represent the whole vent.
• Check the funnel factor: when measuring with a funnel, the funnel factor must be on in the device, and off when measuring without a funnel; otherwise the volume flow is calculated incorrectly.
• Use a flow straightener on swirl diffusers: swirling flow distorts vane measurement; at these outlets, measure with a funnel with a flow straightener.
• Turn on damping for fluctuating values: if the readings fluctuate a lot, enable damping in the Testo Smart App settings.
