Testo 830-T1 (product code 0560 8311) is a pistol-type infrared thermometer that measures surface temperature without contact. With a −30 … +400 °C measuring range, 10:1 optics and single-point laser marking showing the center of the measuring spot, it is used for fast surface temperature checks in heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) applications, trade and industry. It takes two measurements per second and displays the value with 0.1 °C resolution.

Pistol-Type Body, 10:1 Optics and Limit Alarm

As long as the measuring button is held down, the current value is updated on the display; when the button is released, the last value stays on the display with Hold, and you can switch between max./min. values. Lower and upper alarm limits can be set; when the measured value goes outside the limit, the device gives an audible and visual alarm. Emissivity is set between 0.1 … 1.0 according to the surface measured, and the illuminated display lights for 10 seconds with each button press.

The ergonomic pistol design allows comfortable one-handed use. For measuring small targets from a greater distance, the Testo 830-T4 model with 30:1 optics and an external type K probe connection is available.

Technician Tips

• Do not measure shiny metal directly: untreated, shiny metal surfaces have low emissivity; stick emissivity tape on the measuring spot or apply matte paint.
• The target should be larger than the measuring spot: at a distance of 1 m an area about 116 mm in diameter is measured; for thin tubes and small parts, bring the device closer so that surrounding surfaces do not affect the measurement.
• Use the alarm when scanning: when checking many points, define upper and lower limits; the audible alarm reports an out-of-limit value immediately.
• Keep the lens clean: clean the lens with a cotton swab moistened with water or medical alcohol; do not use abrasive cleaning agents.
• Do not look into the laser: the laser is class 2; do not point the beam at the eyes or, via reflective surfaces, at the face.
