Testo 826-T2 (product code 0563 8282) is an infrared thermometer with single-point laser marking that measures surface temperature without contact in the food sector. It allows temperature limits to be checked without opening the packaging and without damaging the product. With its 6:1 optics, it measures an area of Ø28 mm at 100 mm, Ø45 mm at 200 mm and Ø95 mm at 500 mm distance; the laser dot shows the center of the measuring area. It measures in the range −50 … +300 °C with 0.1 °C resolution, and its accuracy is ±1.5 °C in the range −20 … +100 °C. It gives an audible and visual alarm when the set lower and upper limit values are exceeded. The supplied TopSafe protective case protects the instrument from dirt, water and impact and is dishwasher-safe. According to Testo, the instrument together with the TopSafe case is EN 13485 certified and is used in HACCP applications.

Non-Contact Surface Temperature Checks Without Damaging the Packaging

While the measuring button is held down, the instrument measures; when the button is released, the last value remains on the display as HOLD; the stored maximum and minimum values can be displayed and are reset by pressing the measuring button. Emissivity is adjustable between 0.10 and 1.00; the factory setting is 0.95, which is suitable for food and non-metallic surfaces such as paper, ceramics, plaster, wood, paint and plastic. The unit of measurement is set to °C or °F; the instrument switches off automatically if no button is pressed for 1 minute on the infrared measurement screen. It runs on 2 AAA batteries.

Infrared measurement is a surface measurement: if there is dirt, dust or frost on the surface, the temperature of the top layer is read. With packaged products, the measuring point must not be positioned over air gaps inside the packaging. If the value is critical, the core temperature should be verified with a penetration thermometer. The protection class is IP65 when the TopSafe case is closed and its sealing edges are greased.

Technician Tips

• Choose the distance according to the measuring area: with 6:1 optics, the measuring area grows from Ø28 mm at 100 mm to Ø95 mm at 500 mm; when measuring a small surface, move the instrument closer and use the laser dot as the center of the measuring area.
• Check the emissivity: the factory setting of 0.95 is suitable for food and non-metallic surfaces (paper, ceramics, plaster, wood, paint, plastic); if you will be measuring a different material, adjust the emissivity within the range 0.10 … 1.00.
• Verify the core temperature when the value is critical: infrared measurement measures the surface; dirt, dust or frost on the surface affects the result. Do not measure air gaps in packaged products, and check the core temperature with a penetration thermometer for critical values.
• Wait when the environment changes: when the instrument is taken to an environment at a different temperature (such as from cold storage to the sales floor), an adjustment time of approximately 15 minutes is required for accurate infrared measurement.
• Keep the lens and TopSafe in good condition: do not measure with a fogged lens; clean the lens carefully with a cotton swab moistened with water or alcohol, and the housing with a damp, soapy cloth. IP65 protection applies when the TopSafe case is closed and its sealing edges are greased.
