The 5/8" female-threaded, 1/2" bore brass flare nut is a reducing nut that lets you connect a 1/2 copper tube to a 5/8 flare port in air conditioning and refrigeration piping. It allows you to tighten a flared 1/2" tube directly onto a service valve, filter drier or connection port with a 5/8" male thread; no separate adapter or tube swaging is needed. Its forged brass body withstands repeated removal and refitting.

Technical Specifications, Series Sizes and Installation Notes

  • Series sizes: This reducing flare nut series includes 3/8" female thread - 1/4" bore, 1/2" female thread - 3/8" bore and 5/8" female thread - 1/2" bore (this product) options. Before ordering, verify both the thread size of the port you will connect to and the tube diameter; if the two are mixed up, the nut either will not go onto the thread or will not hold the tube.
  • Flare quality determines leak-tightness. If the tube flare is not formed properly, or is cracked or crushed, it will leak refrigerant no matter how much the nut is tightened. Deburr the tube end before flaring and position the flaring tool perpendicular to the tube.
  • Do not overtighten. Excessive torque on a brass nut thins the flare and cracks it over time; if you can use a torque wrench, choose the value suited to the tube diameter; if not, do not force it once a seal has been achieved.
  • Clean the surfaces before installation. Chips or dirt getting into the nut both spoil the seal and get into the circuit, clogging the filter drier and expansion device.
  • After connecting, pressurize the circuit with nitrogen and check for leaks with bubble solution or an electronic detector; do not skip this test before evacuation.
