Testo 816-1 (product code 0563 8170) is a sound level meter (decibel meter) that measures noise levels in the workplace, in public areas, in industry and in production. It meets the requirements of IEC 61672-1 Class 2 and ANSI S1.4 Type 2; it measures A-weighted 30 … 130 dB(A) and C-weighted 35 … 130 dB(C) with ±1.4 dB accuracy. It stores 31,000 measured values in its integrated memory; with the USB cable and PC software, data are transferred to a computer and analyzed.

Logged Measurement of Workplace and Environmental Noise

With a single button, time weighting is switched between fast (125 ms) and slow (1 s), and frequency weighting between A and C. The A curve corresponds to the way the human ear perceives sound pressure; the C curve also evaluates the low-frequency components of noise. Max./min. value hold, a 50-segment bar graph and an illuminated display are provided; exceeding or falling below the measuring range is shown as a warning on the display.

With single-value memory (99 records) and series measurement logging (31,000 records), long-term measurements are carried out in occupational health and safety inspections and environmental noise checks; the PC software also allows online long-term measurement while connected to a computer. It can be connected to other devices via its AC and DC outputs. With the optional sound calibrator and the adjustment screwdriver included in the box, the instrument can be recalibrated on site.

Technician Recommendations

  • Point the microphone at the source: during measurement, aim the microphone directly at the sound source.
  • Keep it away from your body: your body reflects sound; hold the instrument at least 30 cm, preferably 50 cm, away from your body, and use a tripod for precise measurements.
  • Fit the windscreen outdoors: outdoors or in an environment with air movement, wind noise is added to the measured value; always fit the foam windscreen.
  • Take altitude into account: the instrument is calibrated at sea level; a small deviation occurs at high altitude (approx. −0.1 dB at 500 m). For the most accurate result, adjust with a calibrator at the measuring location.
  • Evaluate the "Over" warning: short impulse sounds can trigger an overload warning even if the value on the display looks normal; in this case check the measuring range and the character of the sound.
