Testo 830-T4 Infrared Thermometer with Laser – −30…+400 °C, 30:1 Optics, 2-Point Laser, Type K Probe Input (0560 8314)

Testo 830-T4 (product code 0560 8314) is a pistol-type infrared thermometer that measures surface temperature without contact. Thanks to its 30:1 optics, it measures an area only 36 mm in diameter from a distance of 1 m; the two-point laser shows the boundaries of the measured area. In addition to the −30 … +400 °C infrared measuring range, it also performs contact measurement from −50 … +500 °C with a connected type K thermocouple probe. It is designed for fast, accurate surface temperature measurement in heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) applications and in industry.

Measuring Small Targets from a Distance with 30:1 Optics

The narrow optical field allows small, hard-to-reach, moving or hazardous points to be measured from a safe distance. At distances of 1 m and above, the two laser points mark the upper and lower edges of the measuring spot. The device takes two measurements per second and displays them with 0.1 °C resolution; when the button is released, the last value stays on the display with Hold, and max./min. values are shown. Lower and upper alarm limits can be set; in infrared measurement, the device gives an audible and visual alarm when the value goes outside the limits.

When an external type K thermocouple (air, immersion or surface probe; not included in the scope of delivery) is connected to the probe input, contact temperature measurement is possible. By comparing contact and infrared measurements on the same surface, the emissivity of the surface is determined and the device's emissivity setting (0.1 … 1.0) is set accordingly. The illuminated display lights for 10 seconds with each button press.

For short and medium distance measurements, the Testo 830-T1 model with 10:1 optics is also available.

Technician Tips

• Verify emissivity with a probe: on an unknown surface, first take a contact measurement with a type K surface probe, then change the emissivity setting until the infrared value matches.
• Do not measure shiny metal directly: untreated, shiny metal surfaces have low emissivity; stick emissivity tape on the measuring spot or apply matte paint.
• Caution with live parts: do not take contact measurements with the probe on or near energized parts; also keep the necessary safety distance in infrared measurement.
• Keep the lens clean: clean the lens with a cotton swab moistened with water or medical alcohol; do not use abrasive cleaning agents.
• Do not look into the laser: the laser is class 2; do not point the beam at the eyes or, via reflective surfaces, at the face.
