The Danfoss DML 052 (order code 023Z503791) is a hermetic filter drier fitted in the liquid line of refrigeration and air conditioning circuits. It has a 1/4" SAE flare connection and a filter volume of 5 in³. It belongs to Danfoss’s ELIMINATOR® family.
100% Molecular Sieve — Holds Moisture with the Highest Capacity
A filter drier has three jobs: to remove moisture, acid and solid particles from the circuit. Moisture remaining in the circuit combines with refrigerant and oil to form acid; the acid damages the winding insulation and destroys the compressor. Moisture also freezes at the outlet of the expansion valve and blocks the line.
The difference between DML and DCL is in the core. The DML core is 100% molecular sieve — this gives the highest moisture holding capacity and does not deplete the oil’s additives. The DCL contains 80% molecular sieve + 20% activated alumina; the alumina holds acid but also removes additives in additive-containing POE/PAG oils. For this reason, Danfoss recommends the DML, not the DCL, for systems with additive-containing POE/PAG oils. For acid cleanup after a burnout, however, the DCL is preferred.
The core is a solid core with the binder kept to a minimum — this eliminates the risk of shedding and channeling. The 25 μm filter at the outlet holds solid particles and keeps pressure drop low.
Technical Specifications (Official Danfoss DML/DCL Datasheet)
- Connection: 1/4" (6 mm) SAE flare — no brazing required
- Filter volume: 5 in³ · body volume 0.12 L (net 0.085 L)
- Core: solid core, 100% molecular sieve · surface 95 cm² · volume 35 cm³
- Filter: 25 μm — high retention, low pressure drop; thermally stable up to 120 °C
- Max. working pressure: PS 46 bar — PED approved
- Temperature range: −40 … +70 °C
- Dimensions: overall length L 119 mm · A 75 mm · A1 24.5 mm · A2 50.5 mm · body diameter Ø58 / Ø54 mm
- Net weight: 0.24 kg
- Body: corrosion-resistant powder-coated steel (a special coating option for marine conditions is available)
- Compatible refrigerants: R134a · R404A · R32 · R410A · R407C · R407F · R23 · R1234yf · R1234ze · R448A/R449A · R452A · R444B · R450A
- Oil: mineral, AB, POE/PAG (including additive-containing) — DML is recommended for all
- 🔧 Mounting orientation is free — the only requirement is that the arrow on the body shows the flow direction. Danfoss makes no vertical/horizontal distinction.
- 🔧 Installation location: in the liquid line, before the expansion valve. If a sight glass (SGN/SYJ) is placed after it, saturation of the filter drier can be seen visually.
- Advantage of the flare connection: no brazing — during service it can be removed and replaced without cutting the line. The flare gasket should be renewed at every replacement.
- ⚠️ Do not use with flammable refrigerants: Danfoss has approved only the brazed (ODF) versions for HC refrigerants such as R290, R600, R600a. This flare model is not used in HC systems — in that case the DML 052S (brazed) should be chosen.
- Reading the code: D=drier · M=100% molecular sieve (C would be 80%+20% alumina) · L=liquid line · 05=5 in³ · 2=1/4" (connection, in multiples of 1/8 inch) · no s at the end means flare, with s it is brazed.
- Size siblings: DML 032 (3 in³, 1/4" flare) · DML 082 (8 in³, 1/4" flare) · DML 053 (5 in³, 3/8" flare) · DML 052S (5 in³, 1/4" brazed).
