This double-sided cross flow fan motor is a tangential fan made up of two cylindrical rollers of Ø60 mm and 180 + 180 mm length fitted either side of a central motor. Label ratings: 220 V ~ 50/60 Hz, 38 W, 0.3 A, 2400 rpm (at 50 Hz; 3000 rpm at 60 Hz), insulation class B, label model CNS-5-30/206. It has a galvanised sheet-steel housing and connects to the appliance with a 2-pin plug. In the trade it is also called a radial fan, cross fan motor or turbo radial fan; on this model the roller length is 18 + 18 cm.

Where Is It Used?

• Pellet stoves and fireplaces: a double-blower tangential fan delivers a wide, flat curtain of warm air from the front of the stove; the central motor gives equal airflow to both sides.
• Distribution of warm air in convectors, electric fireplaces and bathroom heaters.
• Internal air circulation in commercial kitchen equipment such as refrigerated display units, bain-maries and ovens; the Ø60 mm tangential fan size is common in these appliances.
• When replacing, compare the roller diameter (60 mm), roller lengths (180 + 180 mm) and motor position (centre) of the old fan. Single-sided 24, 30 and 36 cm models are listed separately.

When Replacing

• Unplug the appliance or switch off its circuit breaker; on stoves, work only after the body has cooled down.
• The connection is a 2-pin plug; if the appliance lead has different terminals, fit suitable spade terminals. Live and neutral are not polarity sensitive.
• Dust and soot on the roller blades cause imbalance and noise; clean the air duct before fitting the new fan.
• Do not bend the sheet-steel frame when screwing the fan in place; a roller rubbing on the housing causes noise and early bearing wear.

Are a radial fan and a cross flow fan the same thing?

In the trade both names are used for the same cross flow (tangential) fan. The name "radiant fan" used locally comes from these fans being common in radiant heaters and stoves.

Can this model replace a single-sided 36 cm fan?

No. Although the total roller length is similar, this model has its motor in the centre; the fan bay of the appliance must be designed for a centre motor. For appliances with the motor at one end, see the single-sided 24, 30 and 36 cm models.

How fast does it run on a 50 Hz mains supply?

2400 rpm on a 50 Hz supply. The 3000 rpm figure on the label applies to 60 Hz supplies.
