Artiko PFN-175D-18 is a capillary-type mechanical thermostat used in household refrigerators. It measures the cabinet temperature with the sensing section at the end of its capillary tube and switches the compressor on and off. The end of the capillary tube is coiled — in the trade this type is also known as a "pig tail".

Stops and Starts the Compressor According to Cabinet Temperature

Inside the mechanical thermostat there is a gas-filled capillary tube. As the cabinet cools, the gas pressure in the tube drops, the bellows contracts and the contact opens, stopping the compressor. When the cabinet warms up, the pressure rises, the contact closes and the compressor runs again. The adjustment shaft shifts this threshold: the lower the knob is set, the less the compressor runs; the higher it is set, the more it runs.

Failure symptoms. When the thermostat fails, typically one of two things happens: the compressor never stops (the contact is stuck, the cabinet overcools and ices up) or never runs (the contact remains open, the cabinet does not cool). In both cases the thermostat contact is measured first — it is an inexpensive part and should be checked before the compressor is blamed.

• ⚠️ Compare before ordering. Thermostats of this type come in variants by capillary tube length and setting range (the same series also includes other versions such as PFN-175D-01). Compare the code on the thermostat you are removing and its capillary tube length with the existing part; a capillary sensing section that is too short will not reach the right spot.
• 🔧 Do not crush or kink the capillary tube. If the gas inside escapes, the thermostat is permanently disabled — it cannot be repaired. During installation, do not route the tube over sharp edges; coil any excess in a wide loop.
• 🔧 The position of the sensing section matters. The coiled end is placed in exactly the same position as the sensing section of the removed thermostat (usually clamped so that it contacts the evaporator surface). If its position changes, the cabinet either overcools or does not cool enough.
• 🔧 Mark the terminals. Before removal, note or photograph which terminal each wire is connected to. If the faston connectors sit loosely, squeeze them slightly — a loose contact heats up and fails.
• The knob is supplied separately. The product is adjusted via the shaft; if the knob of your old thermostat fits, it can be reused.
