Testo 470 (product code 0563 0470) is a digital tachometer (speed meter) that measures the rotational speed of rotating parts both contactlessly (optical) and by contact (mechanical). In optical measurement it measures in the range 1 … 99,999 rpm with ±0.02% accuracy from a distance of up to 600 mm; with the adapter and measuring tip fitted it switches to mechanical speed measurement of 0.1 … 19,999 rpm, and with the measuring wheel fitted to belt speed and length measurement. It is used to check whether motors, shafts and fans are running correctly and to detect overload-related faults early.

Contactless and Contact Speed Measurement in One Instrument

In optical measurement, a reflective mark is stuck onto the part being measured and the instrument's visible red light beam is aimed at the mark; the instrument is operated with one hand. In contact measurement, the measuring tip is pressed against the center of the rotating shaft. With the measuring wheel, the linear speed of conveyor belts, rollers and belts is measured in m/min, m/s, ft/min, ft/s or in/min, and the distance travelled in m, ft or in; the wheel diameter used (0.1 m, 6" or 12") is selected on the instrument.

The instrument stores the last measured value and the max., min. and mean values in memory; after 30 seconds of inactivity it switches itself off, retaining the data. It gives a low battery warning. The supplied SoftCase protective cover protects the instrument against impact; all accessories are stored in the carrying case.

Technician Recommendations

• Match the wheel setting: before measuring with a wheel, set the wheel selection on the instrument to match the fitted wheel; the default setting is the 6" wheel, and a wrong selection shows incorrect speed and length.
• Hold the wheel steady: the accuracy of wheel measurement depends on the pressing force and angle; keep the wheel perpendicular to the surface and in contact with even force.
• Stick the reflector on a clean surface: on oily or dusty surfaces the reflector does not adhere and measurement is interrupted; wipe the surface before sticking it on.
• Compare fan speed with the nameplate: on condenser and evaporator fans, compare the measured speed with the value on the motor nameplate to detect load and bearing problems early.
• Beware of rotating parts: during contact measurement keep hands and clothing away from rotating parts; prefer optical measurement whenever possible.
