The Rothenberger 223500 flaring and swaging set is a professional set that brings together the two basic tube operations of air conditioning and refrigeration installation — flaring and tube swaging — in a single case. A flare provides a gasket-free seal on flare-nut connections, while swaging lets you slide two tubes into each other and braze them without using an additional fitting. Because this set covers both, all installation and maintenance work in the field can be carried out with a single case.

Two Jobs in One Case: Flaring and Tube Swaging

• Swaging (flare) tool: Works on copper tubes in the 1/8" - 3/4" range — all common diameters, from small refrigerator lines to split air conditioner gas lines.

• 🔧 Deburr before flaring. A flare made without cleaning the burr from the mouth of the cut tube does not seat fully on the flare nut surface and leaks; cut the mouth burr-free and ream it lightly.
• The tube must protrude from the bar surface by the right amount. Clamp the tube in the bar with the protrusion appropriate to the flare size; too little protrusion gives an incomplete flare, too much gives an overflowed/cracked flare.
• Do not force the cone. On the clamp-type tool, advance the cone slowly and in one direction; copper that is pressed quickly cracks, especially in cold weather.
• Swaging depth = tube diameter. For a brazed joint, the depth of the swaged socket should be roughly equal to the tube diameter; a shallow socket gives a weak brazed joint.
• Check the flare surface on R410A/R32 lines. With high-pressure refrigerants, a scratched or wavy flare surface will not hold; cutting off a doubtful flare and making a new one is quicker than hunting for a leak.
