The combi boiler water flow regulator (flow limiter) is the part that keeps the flow rate constant in the domestic hot water line regardless of mains pressure. The blue elastomer ring inside the white plastic body narrows its own passage as the pressure increases; this way the water always passes through the plate heat exchanger at the same rate and reaches the set temperature.

This product is the 10 L/min step. The Beretta spare part code is R8009, with Beretta's own trade name Regolatore di flusso E10.

🚨 The Part Says 05 — This Is Not the Flow Rate

In the center of the disc you receive, you will see an embossed 05. This is not the flow rate value and does not mean that the wrong product was delivered. In this family, the color determines the flow rate:

13 L/minOlive greenWorcester 87161070450
14 L/minPink—

In other words, if it were 5 L/min the disc would be yellow; a blue disc means 10 L/min. The same verification can be made with three different manufacturers: Worcester Bosch sells this part as Type E-W Blue 10 Litres, and Beretta as E10.

🪤 The color code is consistent across brands at 10 and 12 L/min, but at lower steps (6–8 L/min) it may vary from manufacturer to manufacturer. Look at the color of your removed part; if the color matches, the step matches.

How Does It Work?

It is not a fixed-hole orifice — it is a dynamic regulator that adjusts itself according to pressure. As described by the manufacturer, it has three states:

  • With no flow: the elastomer ring is relaxed and the passage is at its widest.
  • At normal pressure: the ring is compressed toward its seat by the line pressure and narrows the water passage.
  • At high pressure: the ring is compressed further and the passage narrows even more.

Since the passage gets smaller as pressure increases, the flow rate remains constant. This is why the same boiler delivers water at the same temperature in an apartment with 2 bar mains pressure and in one with 6 bar.

Where Is It Located in the Boiler?

In Beretta's official exploded diagram, this part is item 24 and is located between the fitting (item 23) and the domestic hot water flow switch (item 26). In other words, it is in the domestic water inlet line, just before the water enters the plate heat exchanger.

🪤 Do not confuse it with the flow switch / turbine. The turbine detects that water is flowing and sends a signal to the PCB — it is an electrical part. The regulator has no electrics and measures nothing; it only limits the flow rate mechanically. The two sit side by side on the same line and often fail together.

Failure Symptoms

SymptomProbable condition
Water flows abundantly but lukewarm — never reaches temperatureThe regulator has been removed, or the elastomer has hardened and stays open. Because the flow exceeds the design value, the water does not have time to heat up in the heat exchanger.
When the tap is opened the boiler does not ignite at all, flow is very weakThe regulator is blocked with limescale or sediment. Because the flow drops below the lower limit, the flow switch cannot detect that water is flowing.
Fluctuating temperature — hot one moment, cold the nextThe elastomer is fatigued; heat exchanger scaling may also be involved.
Radiators heat up but no domestic hot waterThe problem is not in the heating circuit; look in the domestic water line (regulator – switch – heat exchanger).

Why Does It Fail Over Time?

The entire regulation relies on the elasticity of the rubber. Temperature, chemicals in the mains water and aging harden the elastomer; the ring can no longer change shape with pressure, and although the part looks intact, it cannot regulate the flow. In hard water areas, a limescale layer adds to this and permanently narrows the passage.

For this reason, visual inspection is misleading: as long as the disc is not torn, it looks intact. The decision is made based on the symptoms above and the age of the part.

🚨 Do Not Remove and Discard the Regulator

Removing a regulator thought to be blocked increases the water flow, so at first it seems to solve the problem. However, when the flow is not limited, the water passes through the heat exchanger too quickly and never reaches the desired temperature — the difference becomes noticeable especially in winter when the mains water is cold. If the part is blocked, it is cleaned or replaced with a new one, not removed.
