Hpeok PKEK-165 is a solid core filter drier fitted in the liquid line of refrigeration and air conditioning circuits — known in the field as a solid core drier. By retaining moisture, acid and solid particles in the refrigerant, it prevents blockage of the expansion valve and acid-related winding damage in the compressor. Its connection is 5/8 inch SAE flare (flare), with inlet and outlet of the same size.
Field advantage of the flare connection: no brazing is done during installation and removal, and no flame is needed. Because the drier can be replaced without opening the circuit, service work is shortened; it is the only option in flammable environments or tight spaces where brazing is not possible. The solder (ODF) equivalent of the same body is PKEK-165S.
The desiccant fill is not loose granules but a single pressed block. In granular driers, the beads rub against each other under vibration and produce dust, and the fill settles over time, opening a bypass channel inside; this does not happen with a block core, and the filtration characteristics remain intact. Solid particle retention is 40 micron, and the pressure drop is low.
The outside of the body is coated with epoxy powder paint; it withstands harsh conditions such as UV, moisture and salt air, and can also be used on condensing units installed outdoors. The arrow on the body shows the flow direction — if the drier is fitted backwards, the filter element is loaded from the wrong direction.

PKEK Code Reading and Size Equivalence
In the PKEK series, the last digit of the code gives the connection size: 162 1/4 inch, 163 3/8 inch, 164 1/2 inch, 165 5/8 inch, 166 3/4 inch, 167 7/8 inch. If it ends with S it is solder (ODF); if not, it is flare (SAE flare). Accordingly, this product is 5/8 inch flare, and its solder equivalent is PKEK-165S.
In all models sharing the 16 series body, the body diameter is Ø63.5 mm and the distance between connection ends is 112 mm; only the overall length changes with the connection type. Because the flare nuts take up space, PKEK-165 is 185 mm, while the solder PKEK-165S is 160 mm — this 25 mm difference must be taken into account in tight installations.
Where Is It Used
It is used in commercial refrigeration and air conditioning circuits with a 5/8 inch liquid line: cold room units, blast chillers, supermarket display case units, split and packaged air conditioner lines, heat pumps and condensing units. Thanks to its flare connection, it is preferred especially on service lines where the drier is replaced periodically.
When Should It Be Replaced
- When replacing the compressor — the drier is renewed together with the new compressor.
- When the circuit has been opened (tube replacement, leak repair) — an opened circuit takes in moisture.
- If a temperature difference that can be felt by hand has developed between the drier inlet and outlet (sign of blockage).
- If the moisture indicator in the sight glass has turned yellow.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between PKEK-165 and PKEK-165S?
The body and desiccant core are the same; the connection type is different. PKEK-165 is flare (SAE flare), PKEK-165S is solder (ODF). Because of the flare nuts, PKEK-165 is longer: 185 mm versus 160 mm.
Is brazing needed when fitting a flare drier?
No. The flare connection is tightened with a nut, and no flame is used. The flared end of the copper tube must be properly formed and free of burrs.
What size line does the Hpeok PKEK-165 fit?
It fits a 5/8 inch liquid line. Both inlet and outlet are 5/8 inch SAE flare connections.
What is the difference between a solid core drier and a normal drier?
In a solid core drier, the desiccant is a single pressed block; in the granular type it consists of loose beads. A block core does not crumble and release dust under vibration, and does not settle over time and open a bypass channel inside, so the filtration characteristics remain intact.
Which refrigerants is PKEK-165 used with?
R22, R407C, R502, R134a, R404A and R507 are listed on the product label. The design pressure is 42 bar (4,200 kPa / 609 psi).
What are its dimensions, will it fit in a tight installation?
Overall length is 185 mm, the distance between connection ends is 112 mm, and the body diameter is Ø63.5 mm. If space is limited, the 160 mm long solder PKEK-165S can be considered.
In which direction is the drier fitted?
The arrow on the body shows the flow direction; it is fitted so that the arrow points in the direction of flow from the condenser to the expansion valve.
