HPEOK PKW-569011 is a compressor oil separator fitted to the discharge line of the refrigeration circuit — known in the field as an oil separator. It separates the oil droplets in the hot gas discharged by the compressor and sends the oil directly back to the crankcase. Its connection is 1-3/8 inch ODF brazed; inlet and outlet are the same size.
Why it is needed: with every cycle, the compressor pumps some oil into the circuit along with the gas. Without an oil separator, this oil accumulates in the evaporator and pipelines; heat transfer drops, the oil level in the compressor crankcase falls and the bearings run without oil. This loss accelerates in applications with long pipe runs, multiple evaporators and low temperatures.
The separated oil collects at the bottom of the body; the float-operated oil return valve opens when the level rises to return the oil to the compressor crankcase and closes when the level drops — so no hot gas escapes. It is fixed to the chassis with the M10 stud on the bottom of the body.
🚨 Before Installation: 0.8 L Oil Charge
Before the oil separator is put into service, 0.8 liters of refrigeration oil must be added to its body. This pre-charge ensures the float operates from the correct level from the first start; otherwise the system draws oil from the compressor in the first hours and the crankcase level drops dangerously. The oil used must be the same type as the compressor's own oil (mineral or POE).
The pre-charge oil table in the manufacturer's documentation lists this model in the 800 ml group. If it is put into service without the oil pre-charge, the oil return float mechanism may be damaged.

Which Systems It Is Used In
- Installations with long pipe runs — the longer the oil's return path to the compressor, the greater the loss.
- Low-temperature circuits — oil thickens in the cold and gets stuck in the evaporator.
- Supermarket and cold room systems with multiple evaporators — oil disperses in the lines.
- Parallel (rack) compressor units — oil balance is critical.
- Commercial refrigeration installations with semi-hermetic and screw compressors.
Size Selection
The oil separator is selected at the same diameter as the discharge pipe. In the HPEOK oil separator series, the connection sizes are 1/2 inch, 5/8 inch, 7/8 inch, 1-1/8 inch, 1-3/8 inch and 1-5/8 inch. This model is for the 1-3/8 inch line. As the size increases, the body volume and the required oil pre-charge also increase: 0.45 L on the 1-1/8 inch model, 0.8 L on this model, 0.9 L on the 1-5/8 inch model.
🪤 The manufacturer's catalog has two different bodies with a 1-3/8 inch connection: the slim-body PKW-559011 (Ø102 mm × 524 mm) and the wide-body PKW-569011 (Ø159 mm × 394 mm). This product is the wide-body one — shorter but larger in volume, so it is an advantage in installations with height restrictions.
Installation Notes
- Mounted upright, between the compressor discharge outlet and the condenser inlet.
- It is positioned close to the compressor but so that it does not take vibration directly; it is fixed with the M10 stud underneath.
- The oil return line is connected to the compressor crankcase; having a service valve on this line makes maintenance easier.
- The manufacturer recommends installing a one-way check valve between the oil separator outlet and the condenser; this prevents refrigerant from migrating back from the condenser during shutdown.
- Prevent the body from cooling down. Refrigerant condenses in a cooled body and dilutes the oil; if installed in a cold environment, insulation or a heater band is applied.
- The oil separator separates most efficiently when operating at or near the compressor discharge temperature.
- During brazing, the body is protected with a wet cloth or heat paste; braze under nitrogen flow.
- Before commissioning, 0.8 L of oil is added, then the system is evacuated and charged.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where in the circuit is the oil separator installed?
It is installed upright in the compressor's discharge line, between the compressor outlet and the condenser inlet. It must not be confused with the liquid trap (accumulator) fitted to the suction line; that is on the low pressure side and does a different job.
How much oil should be added before installation?
For this model, 0.8 liters. This value is also written on the warning label on the product. The oil used must be the same type as the compressor's own oil.
Won't the system work without an oil separator?
It will, but oil leaving the compressor starts to accumulate in the circuit. In systems with long pipe runs, low temperatures or multiple evaporators, this accumulation reduces heat transfer and lowers the crankcase oil level. In such circuits, the oil separator directly affects compressor life.
How does oil return to the compressor?
When the level of oil collected in the body rises, the float valve opens and the oil flows to the compressor crankcase by pressure difference; when the level drops, the valve closes. This prevents hot gas from escaping.
What are its dimensions and weight?
Body diameter Ø159 mm, height 394 mm (39.4 cm), body volume 6.4 L, net weight 5.7 kg. The slim-body PKW-559011 model with the same 1-3/8 inch connection is Ø102 mm × 524 mm.
Which size should I choose?
The oil separator is selected at the same diameter as the discharge pipe — this model is for a 1-3/8 inch line. The series includes 1/2, 5/8, 7/8, 1-1/8, 1-3/8 and 1-5/8 inch sizes.
Which refrigerants is it used with?
R22, R134a, R404A, R407C, R502 and R507 are listed on the product label. The design pressure is 46 bar (4,600 kPa / 667 psi) and the operating temperature is between −10 °C and +120 °C.
