This is a 145-175 µF / 250 V AC rated start capacitor. At the moment of starting, it raises the starting torque of single-phase compressors and electric motors by creating a phase shift in the auxiliary winding. When the motor reaches speed, the relay or PTC takes it out of the circuit; it should not be confused with the run capacitor, which remains in the circuit continuously.
It has a cylindrical CD60 body and a metal mounting clamp that secures the body to the chassis. There are two push-on terminals on the top.
What Does a Start Capacitor Do?
- If the compressor struggles to start, makes a "humming" sound and stops, this is one of the first parts to check.
- A capacitor that has lost its capacitance causes the motor to fail to start and the overload protector to trip repeatedly.
- If there is swelling or bulging on the body, leakage at the terminals or burn marks, the capacitor has reached the end of its life.
- In systems operating in hot environments, capacitance loss is faster; if the fault recurs, the operating conditions should also be reviewed.

Selection and Installation Notes
- When replacing, select the same capacitance range and voltage; do not lower the voltage rating or increase the capacitance arbitrarily.
- Before installation, switch off the power and discharge the capacitor through a suitable resistor; do not short-circuit the terminals directly.
- Tighten the clamp so that it protects the body from vibration; position the capacitor away from hot surfaces and the discharge line.
- Connect the terminals with push-on connectors and do not leave the cable ends loose.
